Job Title: Agriculture Technician

Location: Rivercess County

Reporting To: Program Manager

Responsible For: N/A

Contract duration: Six (6) months, renewable based on performance and funding

Job Purpose:

The Agriculture Officer will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising SRI rice production activities, providing technical support to farmers, and ensuring the adoption of best agronomic practices to improve productivity and sustainability.

Responsibilities:

1 Technical and Field Operations

  • Plan and oversee SRI rice production activities in target communities.
  • Train farmers, farmer groups, and cooperatives on SRI principles and practices, including:
    • Nursery establishment and seed selection
    • Transplanting techniques
    • Water management
    • Weed control (mechanical and manual)
    • Soil fertility and organic matter management
  • Establish and manage demonstration plots for SRI rice production.
  • Provide regular field supervision and on-site technical backstopping to farmers.

Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with Program Manager and community leaders.
  • Support the formation and strengthening of farmer groups and cooperatives engaged in rice production.
  • Coordinate with extension staff and lead farmers for effective outreach.
  • Work closely with LACD livelihood Officers and other field staff.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

  • Collect data on rice acreage, yield, input use, and farmer adoption rates.
  • Monitor crop performance and identify production constraints.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and seasonal reports on activities, progress, challenges, and lessons learned.

Capacity Building and Sustainability

  • Promote climate-smart and environmentally sustainable farming practices.
  • Support farmers in post-harvest handling, storage, and basic value addition.
  • Encourage youth and women participation in rice production activities.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Ensure activities comply with LACD policies, national agriculture guidelines, and donor requirements.
  • Promote accountability, community participation, and safeguarding principles.
  • Identify challenges and propose practical solutions to improve program quality.

Deliverables

  • Approved work plans and activity reports.
  • Timely and accurate monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Training reports and attendance records.
  • Documentation of best practices and lessons learned.
  • Monthly update

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Crop Science, or related field.
  • At least 2–3 years of practical experience in rice production or agricultural extension.
  • Knowledge and experience in SRI rice production is a strong advantage.
  • Experience working with smallholder farmers and rural communities.
  • Good communication and training

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong facilitation and community mobilization skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to travel frequently to project sites.
  • Knowledge of donor-funded project requirements is an asset.

Performance Evaluation

Performance will be assessed based on achievement of assigned deliverable s, quality of work, compliance with organizational policies, and contribution to overall project objectives.
