(COVADEP)
Programme Background
Solidaridad Network West Africa (SWA) with its vast experience in developing sustainable supply chains
for different commodities (including cocoa in West Africa) has signed a new grant contract with the
European Commission-Delegation of the European Union to Liberia to implement the Cocoa Value Chain
Development Programme (COVADEP) in support of the development of the cocoa sector in Liberia.
The programme will be implemented in five counties in Liberia – Lofa, Nimba, Bong, Grand Gedeh and
River Gee, focusing on increasing productivity, value addition, marketing and facilitating improved sector
governance. The overall objective of the programme is to reduce poverty through increased
resilience/competitiveness of the Liberia cocoa sector and improve cocoa farmers’ livelihoods/food
security.
Solidaridad West Africa, Liberia in partnership with the European Union (EU), as the implementer of the
COVADEP project in Liberia seeks to recruit resourceful and self-motivated individuals for the following
positions:
Agronomist – (2 positions)
Locations – Grand Gedeh and River Gee Counties
Job Purpose
The Agronomist will implement and monitor agronomic aspects of the programme and support the
innovation and demonstration of best practices. The position holder shall set up, maintain, monitor and
report on a series of best management practices and field demonstrations with participating farmers and
businesses located in selected districts in the COVADEP counties, of Bong, Grand Gedeh, Lofa and Nimba
and River Gee engaged in aspects of the production, processing, value addition, transportation or
marketing of cocoa.
Major Responsibilities
Coordinates and prioritizes relevant project activities at the local level in cooperation with the
partners, as well as in organizational preparation and in the implementation of these activities
Carries out repeated field visits to the regions in accordance with the requirements of the
Project Management and Coordination Tasks Responsible for coordinating all BMP activities
Participates in identifying needs for external support and advice elaborates on policy
recommendations and develops a strategic approach to managing the assigned programme or
project
Responsible for maintaining relationships with farmers and institutions participating in best
management practices pilots
Develops strategies and technical concepts including guidelines, manuals, and procedures, which
are ready to be applied
Prepares reports and presentation materials
Communicates and channels local interests and aspirations and exchanges ideas and information
for the benefit of the project/programme
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agri-Business or related field
At least 3 years of experience working with farmers in cocoa production and marketing
Experience with community mobilization;
Training experience a strong plus
Research and learning
Report writing
