TITLE: Agronomist: Volunteers for Sustainable Development in Africa
LOCATION: Head Office in Monrovia, with travel in rural areas where VOSIEDA has her activitiesJOB TYPE: Full Time (Initial 1-year renewal based on performance)
ROLE PURPOSE:

Provide technical leadership for the design, implementation, and monitoring of crop production and climate-smart agriculture interventions under VOSIEDA projects. The Agronomist supports smallholder farmers and producer groups to improve productivity, soil health, crop quality, post-harvest practices, and resilience through field-based advisory services, training, demonstration plots, and evidence-based agronomic planning.

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND:

Founded in 2000, Volunteers for Sustainable Development in Africa (VOSIEDA) is a Liberian nonprofit and a network of development professionals working to promote prosperity, reduce extreme poverty, and strengthen peace and stability in Liberia and West Africa’s Mano River Union Basin region. VOSIEDA’s work focuses on saving the planet and fighting extreme poverty among women, youth, children, and other excluded groups. We advance community solutions to address development challenges and empower local people to care for nature that sustains all lives.

VOSIEDA works across five signature programs to empower and support local communities to promote sustainable development to end extreme poverty, its root causes, and consequences in Liberia and West Africa’s Mano River Basin region, including 1). Climate Change & Environmental Sustainability, 2) Food Security & Livelihoods Enhancement, 3) Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality, 4) Governance & Social Development,

5) Media & Civic Society Strengthening.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

 

· Lead agronomic planning and field implementation of crop production, soil fertility, seed systems, water and land management, and climate-smart agriculture activities in target communities.

· Develop and deliver farmer trainings, coaching sessions, extension materials, and practical demonstrations on good agricultural practices, integrated pest management, safe input use, and post-harvest handling.

· Establish and monitor demonstration plots; conduct regular field visits to diagnose production constraints, pest and disease outbreaks, and nutrient deficiencies, and recommend corrective actions.

· Support seasonal planning, crop calendars, input forecasting, yield estimation, and agronomic data collection; maintain accurate field records, progress reports, and technical briefs for project management.

· Coordinate with project teams, government extension services, research institutions, community leaders, cooperatives, and private-sector actors to strengthen market-oriented, inclusive, and sustainable agriculture outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Agriculture, Soil Science, or a related field; a Master’s degree is an added advantage.
  • Relevant professional training in climate-smart agriculture, integrated pest management, extension, seed systems, or agricultural project management is an advantage.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in agronomy, extension services, or agricultural development programming.
  • Demonstrated experience in farmer training, demonstration plots, crop husbandry, pest and disease management, soil fertility improvement, post-harvest handling, and agronomic data analysis, preferably in NGO or donor-funded projects.
  • Strong report-writing and computer skills; willingness to travel extensively to rural communities; knowledge of Liberian agricultural systems and local languages is an advantage; motorcycle riding skills are an added asset.
