Who we are?

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a German federal enterprise offering workable, sustainable and effective solutions in political, economic and social change processes.

On behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, GIZ supports the Government of Liberia in the health sector through a project focusing on the improvement of surveillance and response system for diseases, especially those with epidemic potential in the partner counties in south east Liberia.

In furtherance for said support, the HSSEP project intends to provide support to 3 targeted counties in the South East (Grand Kru, Maryland and River Gee) to implement the laboratory quality management approach (according to SLIPTA/SLMTA) and Antimicrobial Resistance Stewardship program. The Technical Advisor will support the two GIZ technical advisors in the implementation of the laboratory quality management approach and steer independently the support to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the three counties.

Position: Antimicrobial Stewardship Project Advisor

Duty Station: Maryland, Harper with frequent travel to Grand Kru, River Gee and Monrovia, possibly to Grand Gedeh and Sinoe

Contract Period: Subject to agreement of the commissioner, this post is available from September 2022 up to June 2023.

Responsibilities

Support the antimicrobial stewardship programmes (AMS) at selected clinical sites as a systematic effort to educate and persuade prescribers of antimicrobials to follow evidence-based prescribing. Support GIZ TAs with the implementation of laboratory quality management improvement activities.

Tasks

  • Provide advice and support to the clinical sites participating in the project: JJ Dossen Hospital (JJDH), Harper, Maryland County; Rally Time Hospital (RTH), Grand Cess, Grand Kru County; and Fish Town Hospital (FTH), Fish Town, River Gee County
  • Ensure the on-going engagement of the clinical sites towards sustaining the AMR activities beyond the project funding period
  • Coordinate the transportation of samples, liaison with the laboratory and communication with the clinical sites and motorbike drivers
  • Find creative solutions to sustain gains made during the implementation of the AMR project
  • Support and coordination with the submission of AMR data to WHO online data site GLASS
  • Support the two GIZ technical advisors with the implementation of the laboratory quality management approach.
  • Data management for the laboratory quality management approach.
  • Support the two GIZ technical advisors with admin and finance procedures for the implementation of the laboratory quality management approach.
  • Performing other duties as may be requested by supervisor

Required qualifications, competences and experience

Qualifications

  • Bsc or other equivalent diploma from a nursing, midwifery, public health or laboratory program
  • Valid Relevant License to Practice in Liberia if applicable

Professional experience

  • At least 4 years professional experience in a comparable position.

Other knowledge, additional competences

  • Proven knowledge of the conditions pertaining in the South East
  • Experience with the GIZ and/or in an international organization or company is desirable
  • Excellent working knowledge of standard IT technologies/applications, notably MS Outlook, Excel, Word, experience with MS Teams is a strong asset
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is essential
  • High level of integrity, diligence, willingness to learn, solution oriented and capacity for teamwork
