JOB SUMMARY

The Blast Man is responsible for supporting the planning, preparation, and safe execution of blasting operations at the Edrine Rock Crusher Inc. quarry, working in strict compliance with national explosives regulations and site safety procedures. As a front-line, on-site leader, the Blast Man represents the company’s commitment to safety in the field, oversees the immediate blast area before and after firing, and plays a critical role in ensuring efficient and controlled rock fragmentation to support crushing and production targets. The role reports directly to the General Manager and requires strong technical knowledge, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to safety.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as an on-site leader by setting a strong example of safety, discipline, and professionalism for drill crews, laborers, and other quarry personnel during blasting operations.
  • Assist in the planning and layout of blast patterns, including drill hole spacing, burden, and depth, in coordination with the Plant Manager/Crushing Supervisor and General Manager.
  • Handle, transport, and store explosives and blasting accessories in strict accordance with Liberian explosives regulations and manufacturer safety guidelines.
  • Charge and prime drill holes with explosives and initiation systems following approved blast designs and safety protocols.
  • Establish and enforce exclusion zones, warning signals, and evacuation procedures to protect personnel and equipment before every blast.
  • Conduct pre-blast inspections of the site, drill holes, and surrounding area to confirm readiness and identify any safety hazards.
  • Fire blasts using approved initiation methods and confirm all charges have detonated as planned.
  • Carry out post-blast inspections to check for misfires, unstable ground, or other hazards, and manage any misfires according to safety procedures before clearing the area.
  • Maintain accurate records of explosives usage, blast designs, drill hole logs, and incident reports for regulatory and company compliance.
  • Monitor and manage explosives inventory, ensuring secure storage, proper documentation, and reconciliation of stock with the General Manager or designated custodian.
  • Coordinate closely with the drilling crew, plant supervisor, and equipment operators to align blasting schedules with production and crushing plant needs.
  • Report any safety incidents, near-misses, ground instability, or equipment issues to the General Manager immediately.
  • Ensure all blasting activities comply with applicable Liberian mining, safety, and environmental regulations at all times.
  • Train and mentor junior blasting crew members on safe handling practices and blasting procedures.
  • Carry out any other duties as reasonably assigned by the General Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Valid certification or license to handle and use explosives, in accordance with Liberian regulatory requirements.
  • 3 – 5 years of proven experience working as a Blast Man or in a similar blasting/drilling role within a quarry, mining, or construction environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of blast design, drilling patterns, explosives handling, and initiation systems.
  • Working knowledge of relevant explosives safety regulations, storage requirements, and transportation procedures.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy sufficient to maintain blast logs, explosives inventory records, and incident reports.
  • Clean safety record with no history of serious safety violations.

SKILLS & KEY ATTRIBUTES

  • Strong leadership qualities and the ability to act responsibly as an on-site representative of the company during high-risk operations.
  • Excellent understanding of explosives safety, blast design principles, and emergency response procedures.
  • High level of reliability, discipline, and personal accountability, given the safety-critical nature of the role.
  • Good communication skills for coordinating with supervisors, drill crews, and quarry personnel.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to manage demanding outdoor site conditions.
  • Honesty and integrity in handling explosives, company property, and confidential blast records.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment under pressure, especially during misfire or emergency situations.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Based on-site at the Edrine Rock Crusher Inc. quarry in Zarzone Town, District 1, Margibi County.
  • Exposure to outdoor conditions, dust, noise, and hazards typical of a quarry blasting environment.
  • May require early morning or occasional weekend work to meet production and blasting schedules.
  • Strict adherence to all explosives handling protocols, site safety procedures, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
