Purpose of this Position

Under the general supervision of the Deputy Director, the position will provide support in the areas Caregiving to Second Chance-Chimpanzees.

Position summary

 

An Animal Caregiver plays the core role of the operations of Second Chance-

Chimpanzee Refuge-Liberia located in Charlesville Liberia which is also the duty station. The

role involves a full commitment and dedication to the welfare of the retired chimpanzees and

all the activities associated directly and indirectly with their livelihood. The position also

requires versatility for certain individuals to take on duties pertaining to daily operations of the

project; the welfare of the chimpanzees; management of all personnel; and long-term

sustainability.

 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Maintain health and welfare of chimpanzees, including daily care, appropriate diet, birth control and preventative health measures.
  • Maintain daily animal health, feeding, contraception and other animal related records are collected reviewed and filed for future reference.
  • Confirm that adequate animal food is procured and prepared, and animals are feed appropriately daily and correct or report to the Deputy Director about any shortfalls.
  • Support and participate in veterinary procedures that require immobilization on and off the island.
  • Support the orientation of new staff or volunteers on chimpanzee behaviour, handling and care-giver-chimp interaction protocols.
  • Timely reporting any concerning reports or observation and potential medical needs of chimpanzees to the Head Animal Care-giver or the resident veterinarian.
  • Monitor health of chimpanzees and report any medical or behavioural issues with the chimpanzees to the Head Animal Care-giver and work with the resident veterinarian to administer medication/treatment and take accurate records of successful attempt.
  • Maintain hygienic during food preparation and highlight any potential dangers to the Head Animal Care-giver or the Veterinarian any possible risks of disease transmission between staff and the chimps during food preparations (including incidents of infections from a member of the house hold-measles, chicken pox, mumps and other children conditions)
  • Ensure timely delivery of food and fresh water to chimpanzees via boat to ensure their proper diet and nutrition and therefore boat driving.
  • Participate in visitor tours (tourists and student groups), including media outlets, to the islands and educate them about the chimpanzees
  • Participate in all organisation public campaigns whenever he is called upon by HSI Office or the Deputy Director.
  • Comply to animal care staff roster and ensure adequate man power at all time and report to Head Animal Care-giver or Deputy Director of any deficits. This includes official day offs, holidays, vacation, sick-leave and compassionate leave days.

Hours of Work

  • At least 40 hours per week
  • Must be prepared to work additional hours/days as requested by Deputy Director

Competency Profile:

  • Certificate in animal science, First Aid or any on the job training in taking care of animals
  • Ability to integrate safety in your daily work
  • Ability to work within a multi-cultural environment, with perceptive sensitivity to varied staff (national and international) personal and cultural management needs
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to think and act strategically in the design and execution of plans;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to take stock of cleaning materials
  • Physical fitness
