TITLE: Communication Officer
LOCATION: Monrovia, Liberia, with frequent travel in rural areas where VOSIEDA has her activitiesJOB TYPE: Full Time (Initial six months, renewal based on performance)
ROLE PURPOSE:

The communication officers are expected to work under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager & Program Director and overall guidance of the Team Leader to support and maintain internal and external communication with our partners and ensures that VOSIEDA communicates and reports on its strategic and activities clearly, coherently, and consistently, to stakeholders and the wider public, to promote transparency, accountability, and understanding

of VOSIEDA’s work.

The communication Officer writes and distributes content to promote the organization’s products, brand, or activities. Hence, act as a liaison between the public, the organization, and the media to ensure the organization stands out. She must possess strong communication and leadership skills, analytical and strategic thinking abilities, talent for researching the attitudes and perceptions of the targeted audience, multi-task, and superior interpersonal skills. The Communication Officer will deal with the organization’s communications efforts, including marketing and public relations. She also completes market research, implements communication policies, and communicates with media personnel for any news to keep the brand’s reputation.

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND:

Founded in 2000, Volunteers for Sustainable Development in Africa (VOSIEDA) is a Liberian nonprofit and a network of development professionals working to promote prosperity, reduce extreme poverty, and strengthen peace and stability in Liberia and West Africa’s Mano River Union Basin region. VOSIEDA’s work focuses on saving the planet and fighting extreme poverty among women, youth, children, and other excluded groups. We advance community solutions to address development challenges and empower local people to care for nature that sustains all lives.

VOSIEDA works across five signature programs to empower and support local communities to promote sustainable development to end extreme poverty, its root causes, and consequences in Liberia and West Africa’s Mano River Basin region, including 1). Climate Change & Environmental Sustainability, 2) Food Security & Livelihoods Enhancement, 3) Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality, 4) Governance & Social Development,

5) Media & Civic Society Strengthening.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Manages and elaborates content on the VOSIEDA website, one of the principal mediums of communication of the organization, ensuring information is clearly presented, relevant, and continuously updated.
  • Maintain VOSIEDA presence on various social media platforms and help create and publish content that is relevant to our communities; regularly analyze and report on the activity on social media networks and website.
  • Develop communication products with the various Project teams and consultation with the program manager, including brochures, information sheets, press releases, website content, social media posts, reports, and other communication materials.
  • Maintain a database of key stakeholders and media.
  • Provides communication support as needed for seminars, lectures, conferences, and public events on major issues and events concerning VOSIEDA WEST AFRICA
  • Support the communication and visibility of meetings, workshops, and events.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor all project communication strategies in line with the project components and VOSIEDA Strategic Plan. Supports internal VOSIEDA communication by preparing regular updates on events and activities.
  • Manages media components of various projects, prepares press releases, responds to inquiries, develops, and manages media outreach plans as required, and ensures that material for the media can be used by the media and understood by the public
  • Supports advocacy campaigns for VOSIEDA Team Supervise and guide the communication assistant to grow professionally and carry out her assigned duties
  • To support all program manager in preparing communication plan for all project proposal.
  • Conduct social media analysis for project Open Development platforms and buy-in Liberia market platforms.
  • Measure audience engagement and contribute to building the various social media fan base through assessment of key audiences, content planning, content management, search engine optimization, analytics, and assessment of the effectiveness of platforms and content.
  • Lead in moderating social media platforms, engaging with the organization’s social media audience, and responding to online queries.
  • Prepare press releases, project presentations, and other communications materials related to meetings, launches, inauguration ceremonies, and other related project events.
  • Edit/re-write human interest stories and photo essays contributed by non-communication staff.
  • Oversees production of graphic design content for social media, such as fact graphs, and info graphs, and prepares other documents that require simple design such as brochures.
  • Ensure facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing focusing on the organization of training for the project staff and partners on communications.
  • Performs any other related duties as may be requested by the Programmer Manager and supervisors.

Fundraising

  • Responsible for building good relationships with prospective donors and clients across multiple sectors, communicating with the broader public and internal teams, delegating tasks, and drawing up plans to ensure annual targets are met.
  • Conducting research on fundraising opportunities.
  • Writing funding proposals and submitting these to potential donors.
  • Providing support to program managers to develop quarterly budgets.
  • Implementing a variety of marketing strategies and promotional campaigns.
  • Organizing and attending non-profit events and networking with relevant stakeholders.
  • Establishing good relationships with staff, members of the public, and the media.

  • Support the all Program Managers and VOSIEDA in embracing and implementing fully ‘durable Solutions; in partnership in line with VOSIEDA’s mission
  • Sufficiently support the Program Managers in meeting their needs for quality programming and developing programs that meet the needs of communities we serve.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least 5 years’ working experience with national and international NGO as Communication person
  • Recognized leadership role in relevant technical areas at both field and office level
  • University Degree, preferably a Master’s degree in Communication, or in an area of social development
  • Very good understanding of Liberian or West African context.
  • Experience in working with partner organizations in development settings.
  • A general appreciation of the issues concerning the NGO sector, both developments.
  • Solid experience of developing and managing monitoring and learning systems
  • Good analytical skills. Effective negotiator, with the ability to positively influence cross departmental and cross sector working
  • Credibility to lobby, influence and represent VOSIEDA at all levels
  • Resource management, training, capacity building, coaching, and mentoring skills
  • Ability and willingness to dramatically change work practices and hours, and work with incoming teams.
  • Commitment to and understanding of VOSIEDA’s aims, values and principles including rights-based approaches
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and knowledge of French will be an asset
  • Ability to work within a team
