Build something Liberia has never had
Ask a trader in Monrovia how much they ought to be saving each week and they will not be able to tell you. Not because they cannot count, but because nobody has ever sat down and worked it out with them. Nobody has looked at what they take on a good day and a bad day, , what they are trying to build toward, and told them what to put aside and why. That kind of guidance simply does not exist for most Liberians. Nobody offers it.
So people guess. They settle on a figure that sounded about right, or they join a susu and pay whatever amount the collector set, whether or not it fits what they actually earned that day. On a bad day they pay it anyway, because that is how the arrangement works, and the money comes out of a business at the moment it can least afford it.
The money is not safe either. It sits at the stall, or under a mattress, or with a collector who charges for the privilege and sometimes does not come back. Everybody knows somebody it happened to. But keeping money safe is the smaller half of the problem. Somewhere secure to put your money is worth very little if nobody ever tells you how much to put there, or what you are putting it there for.
And the banks are not built for any of this. No payslip, no collateral, and no reason to walk into a
branch that does not want them.
Eshango is a Liberian fintech company building a financial growth platform for everyone
The model is savings first. Our agents go to people where they work, every day, and collect whatever they can put aside, even if it is L$50. That money sits in their own name and it builds. Once it has built, it unlocks credit through our credit union: a loan given against a record of saving rather than against collateral they do not have.
But the money is only the beginning. What we are really building is the guidance nobody has ever had. Our long-term aim is that every Eshango client receives bespoke, individually tailored financial advice: practical and actionable, built around their own takings, their own trading patterns and their own ambitions. Not general encouragement to save, but a clear answer to how much, and why, and what it is going to get them, for this person, this month, toward what they are actually trying to achieve personally and in their business.
A platform that does not simply hold people’s money, but tells them what to do with it and helps them grow it.
A trader at Red Light. A tailor. A taxi driver. Someone who has never held an account in their own name. If this works, financial growth stops being reserved for people who already have money and becomes available to anyone who can put aside a little of what they earn.
We are early, we are small, and what we are attempting has not been done properly in Liberia before. We are looking for a Liberian who wants to build it.
The job in one line
You are the face of Eshango outside the company: you bring people in, you keep them, and you tell us honestly whether we are actually working for them.
Everything that faces outward is yours. Clients, marketing, partnerships, community relationships, how Eshango is spoken about in the markets, and the research that tells us what to build next. You will spend most of your week in markets, not at a desk.
What you will actually be doing
- Bringing new clients to our agents, and working out which pitch, which markets and which introductions actually work
- Finding out why people stop saving, and bringing back the ones who can be brought back. You will do this alongside our Internal Lead, who will spot who has gone quiet while you find out why
- Owning how Eshango looks and sounds to Liberia: our materials, our presence in the markets, and what people say about us when we are not there
- Building partnerships with market associations, trading groups, cooperatives, community leaders and organisations working in financial inclusion
- Representing Eshango externally at community meetings, sector gatherings and anywhere our standing is built or damaged
- Working alongside new agents on their routes, making the first client introductions with them, then handing it over
- Managing our client phone line, so any client with a question or a worry can reach Eshango directly and not only through their agent
- Finding out what susu collectors and money lenders on each route actually charge, and telling us plainly where we do not compare well
- Teaching our agents to have the Eshango Flex conversation well, and listening in on the route to help them improve
- Helping build the guidance side of Eshango, because you will understand better than anyone what advice clients would actually find useful and act on, and what they have never been told
- Writing one honest report for our CEO on what is growing, what is not, and what you have learned
- Any other tasks to be determined by the CEO
Who we are looking for
We care far more about whether you can win a client’s trust than about your qualifications. Women are strongly encouraged to apply.
- You know Liberian markets. You understand how traders think about money, who they trust and why, and you are comfortable standing at a stall having a real conversation
- You are credible with very different people. A market chairlady, an NGO director and a trader selling pepper should all take you seriously
- You are genuinely curious. You want to know why somebody stopped saving, not simply report that they did
- You are honest, including when the news is bad. We would much rather hear that something is not working
- You work independently and you are driven by goals. Nobody will hand you a process, because there is not one yet. You will agree targets with our CEO and then be trusted to go and hit them
- You are happy to be on your feet in markets, This is not an office job and will not become one
- You can move around Paynesville easily and possibility to travel to other areas of country when needed
Helpful but not required
- You have started or owned your own business. We value an entrepreneurial mindset highly, because somebody who has had to find their own customers and manage their own money understands our customers from the inside is an advantage
- Experience in financial services, microfinance, mobile money, savings groups or community organising
- Experience in marketing, sales, communications or business development, in any sector
- Experience running interviews, surveys or community consultations
Minimum Qualification Requirement: Must be a University Graduate
The honest parts
Better that you know these before you apply than discover them in month two.
- We want somebody starting in September, so if you are on a long notice period this may not work for us
- You will be on your feet, in markets, in all weather, four days a week
- There is no marketing department, no assistant and no budget to hand work to somebody else. You and two colleagues are the Liberia team
- Things will change. We are testing a model, so what you are asked to do in month six may not be what you started with
- One part of the job is confirming client balances independently and reporting straight to the CEO. It is a check on the system, not on your colleagues, but some people find it uncomfortable and it is not optional
- You will hear difficult things from clients about us. Passing them on accurately is part of the job, not disloyalty to the team
What we offer
- A competitive base salary, plus a monthly performance incentive tied to client growth and retention. As Eshango grows, you earn more, because your work is what makes it grow.
- [Transport allowance, phone and data allowances
- A senior role with real ownership. You will decide how Eshango grows and how it is seen in Liberia, not execute somebody else’s plan
- Direct access to the founders. You report to the CEO and speak to them every week
- A senior Liberian advisor as your mentor, separate from your line manager, for your own development
- The chance to build something that lasts longer than you are in the job. If Eshango works, thousands of Liberians will hold savings in their own name, be able to borrow against their own record rather than somebody else’s collateral, and have real guidance on growing what they earn. The way that happens will be the way you designed it. Very few roles in Liberia offer that

Our process
We are moving quickly because we want somebody in post in September. Every stage happens on a rolling basis as applications come in.
- Step one. A short WhatsApp call, usually within a few days of your application arriving, to check the role suits you, discuss your salary expectations and confirm that you could start in September
- Step two. An interview in person, about an hour. Candidates who reach this stage receive the full role description
We will tell you where you stand at every stage, including if the answer is no.
Eshango welcomes applications from anyone qualified to do this work. Women are strongly encouraged to apply. [Insert any registration or equal opportunity wording required.]
About those questions
There are no right answers and we are not testing your English. For the two that ask what you would say, write the words you would genuinely use standing at a stall, not a description of your approach. We want to see how you think about somebody else’s money, and how you talk to people about it, because that is most of this job. Short and honest beats long and polished.

Part 2. Role description
Attach this to the advert for candidates who want the detail. It is also the basis of the contract and the first performance conversation.
| Liberia External Lead Clients, marketing, partnerships, community, research, Flex Markets and communities, full-time, minimum four days a week in the field, reports to the Virtual CEO |
| Field presence • Spend a minimum of four days a week in markets and communities. Desk work fits around field days, not the reverse • Be present on market days specifically, since that is when clients are trading and when Eshango is visible • Walk every active route often enough to be recognised by the clients on it, not only by the agent • Hold conversations with clients at their stalls rather than gathering feedback by phone, because what somebody says standing at their own stall differs from what they say to a caller • Be visible at community meetings, association gatherings and trading group sessions on a regular cycle rather than only when something is needed • Record what you observed on each field day so it feeds the monthly synthesis rather than being lost • Report days spent in the field as a number in the Monday update to the CEO |
| Bringing clients in • Own the client acquisition strategy: how Eshango finds, approaches and enrols clients along each agent route • Develop the client pitch and all enrolment materials, tested in the market rather than written at a desk, and designed to work for people with varying literacy • Work alongside each newly activated agent on their route in the first weeks, make the first introductions together, then hand the approach over • Run community-level acquisition activity including market day demonstrations, trading group sessions and group introductions • Ensure every newly activated agent has at least five clients within thirty days, and investigate the cause when they do not • Build peer referral into the client experience, since a client who has had a good first experience is the most credible route to the trader beside them • Agree quarterly acquisition targets with the CEO and track progress weekly |
| Retention, jointly with the Internal Lead • Share ownership of client retention with the Internal Lead. They detect who is going quiet from the deposit records; you find out why by going to see the client • Diagnose lapses in person. The reason somebody stopped saving is the single most useful piece of information available to Eshango and it cannot be inferred from transaction data |
Own the value causes of lapsing: the pitch was wrong, the saving amount did not suit them, they never understood what they were getting, or a susu collector offered something they preferred
- Refer service causes to the Internal Lead without trying to fix them: a missed route, an unrecorded deposit, a slow withdrawal, a wrong balance
- Own reactivation. Contact lapsing and dormant clients, understand what changed, and bring back those who can be brought back
- Attend the monthly retention review with the Internal Lead, working from the same cohort data, and agree together which side each cause sits on
- Share ownership of the gap between registration and first deposit. You own whether the pitch set an expectation the service can meet; the Internal Lead owns whether the client understood what they signed up for
- Escalate jointly to the CEO any lapse pattern neither of you can resolve, or that points to a pricing or product problem
Marketing and external promotion
- Own everything that presents or promotes Eshango outside the business in Liberia
- Build Eshango’s presence in target market communities through consistent visibility rather than advertising
- Create simple, locally appropriate materials for agents to use on the route, in formats that work for varying literacy
- Own the brand in practice: how Eshango looks, sounds and is spoken about in the markets where it operates
- Manage any digital presence relevant to the Liberia market, including WhatsApp community groups and association pages
- Build a library of real client and agent stories, which is the most credible marketing available and is also valuable to the CEO for investor reporting
- Ensure every claim in every client-facing material is true and deliverable, and that nothing implies a loan is guaranteed or automatic
- Ensure all client-facing material correctly identifies Eshango Credit Union as the provider of the financial services, since accuracy about who holds a client’s money is a compliance requirement and not a presentational choice
- Watch for agents over-promising, particularly on loans, and report it to the Internal Lead who manages the agent
- Nobody else speaks publicly for Eshango in Liberia without your agreement, and only the CEO can commit the business to anything
Partnerships and external relationships
- Identify and develop partnerships that extend Eshango’s reach or standing: market associations, trading cooperatives, community groups, financial inclusion organisations and employer groups
- Own day-to-day relationships with mobile money operator field teams and resolve operational friction quickly
- Represent Eshango at community meetings, association assemblies, sector gatherings and local stakeholder events
- Assess every partnership before committing: what Eshango gains, what it commits to, what the risk is, and how long before value appears
Present significant partnership proposals to the Technical Advisor for strategic review before they go to the CEO for approval and signature
- Manage active partnerships and track whether they are producing the introductions or access that was expected
- Take forward introductions opened by the Liberian Advisor, building the relationship yourself rather than leaving it dependent on them
Eshango Flex and client guidance
- Own the Flex proposition and the words agents use, grounded in what research shows clients actually value
- Design the Flex conversation as a repeatable approach agents can use once they have standing on a route, opening from the client’s own saving behaviour rather than from the product
- Train agents on the conversation jointly with the Internal Lead, who owns delivery of agent training
- Coach agents on it over time: listen to real conversations on the route, give specific feedback afterwards, and pair agents who convert well with those who do not
- Track Flex conversion by route and by agent, and identify what distinguishes the agents who convert
- Never allow Flex to be sold under pressure, and treat high conversion with poor retention as a warning rather than a success
- Contribute to Eshango’s longer-term ambition of individually tailored financial guidance, by establishing what advice clients would actually find useful and act on, and feeding that to the Technical Advisor as product input
The client phone line
- Own the published Eshango contact number, so any client with a question or concern can reach the business without going through their agent
- Ensure every client is told the number at enrolment and that it appears on all clientfacing material
- Log every call, categorise the themes, and report volume and themes to the CEO monthly
- Escalate to the CEO the same day any call suggesting money is missing, an agent has behaved improperly, or a client has been pressured
- Use recurring call themes as research input, since a question asked repeatedly is usually a product or communication failure
Understanding the competition
- Know what susu collectors, money lenders and other savings arrangements on each route actually offer: the amount, the frequency, the fee, the payout cycle and how disputes are handled
- Understand why somebody stays with a susu collector rather than moving to Eshango, and be specific rather than assuming trust is the only factor
- Report to the CEO where Eshango’s terms genuinely do not compare well, since pricing is a CEO decision and cannot be fixed with better messaging
- Track the trading calendar and its effect on saving, including harvest, school fees and holiday periods, and plan acquisition and reactivation around it
Flag any new entrant or market change that affects Eshango’s assumptions
Trust recovery
- Own the rebuilding of Eshango’s standing in any community where clients have been affected by an agent problem
- Work alongside the Internal Lead, who handles the money and the records, while you handle the community
- Speak to affected clients in person rather than by message, and be honest about what happened and what Eshango is doing
- Report to the CEO what clients are saying in that community, including when it is damaging
- Never make a commitment about compensation or restitution, which is the CEO’s decision alone
Community intelligence for agent recruitment
- Supply the Internal Lead with community intelligence before each recruitment cycle: who holds standing in a market, which trading groups matter, and where a credible candidate is likely to be found
- Flag any candidate met through community or partnership work who fits the agent profile, and pass them to the Internal Lead rather than approaching them directly
- Feed back how an agent is spoken about in the market, since that is information the performance data will not show
Research and reporting
- Design and run regular research with clients and agents through structured conversation and route observation, focused on whether Eshango is meeting real needs
- Turn findings into prioritised product proposals and bring them to the Technical Advisor monthly
- Take patterns of operational problems from the Internal Lead and investigate the clientside cause
- Produce a monthly report for the CEO and Technical Advisor covering acquisition, retention by cohort, reactivation, partnerships, call line themes and market intelligence
- Maintain the community-level evidence base for where Eshango should expand next
Working with the Tech Lead
- Attend the weekly build session and bring what clients and agents are struggling with in the product
- Report client-facing friction with the specific point at which somebody gave up, since that is what makes a problem fixable
- Work with the Technical Advisor on experience problems, providing the field evidence they need to specify a fix
- Test any experience change with a small group on a route before wider release, and report honestly whether it helped
Independent client balance confirmation
- Each month, contact a sample of clients across every active route and ask them to confirm what they have saved in the past month and their current balance
- Conduct this check independently of the Internal Lead and report the result directly to
the CEO, whether or not anything is wrong
- Report any client whose recollection differs materially from the platform record to the CEO the same day, without discussing it first with the agent or the Internal Lead
- Include in the sample every client on any route where the Internal Lead has flagged a discrepancy that month
- Treat this as a standing routine rather than an investigation, so agents expect it and it carries no implication of suspicion
What this role does not do
- You do not recruit or train agents. You supply the community intelligence and the Internal Lead recruits
- You do not process deposits, withdrawals or loan applications, and you do not handle client money at any point
- You do not manage the day-to-day performance of active agents
| Measure | What good looks like |
| Ninety-day retention (joint) | Of clients acquired in a month, the share still depositing ninety days later. Headline measure, shared with the Internal Lead. Baseline set in the first quarter |
| Lapse diagnosis rate | Share of lapsed clients on the Internal Lead’s weekly list who are actually contacted and whose reason is recorded |
| Reactivation rate | Share of lapsing clients contacted who resume depositing within thirty days |
| Registration to first deposit (joint) | Share of registered clients making a first deposit within seven days. Target approaching 100 per cent, since a registration without a deposit is not a client |
| New clients per active agent | At least five within thirty days of an agent reaching active status, then continued growth |
| Flex conversion with retention | Conversion by route, read alongside whether converted clients are still saving at ninety days |
- You do not fix service failures. You identify them and refer them to the Internal Lead
- You do not set pricing or the commission structure. You report where they are uncompetitive and the CEO decides
- You do not produce financial reports or conduct transaction reconciliation, other than the client balance confirmation above
How the role is measured
Retention leads deliberately, and is measured jointly with the Internal Lead. A role measured on enrolments alone produces enrolments that do not last. Performance against these measures also determines the monthly incentive.
| Partnerships producing access | Partnerships that have generated real introductions or community access, not agreements signed |
| Client call line | Volume and themes reported monthly, every serious call escalated the same day |
| Balance confirmation | Completed every month across every active route and reported to the CEO, clean or not |
| Field days | Minimum four per week, reported as a number every Monday |
