SOS Children’s Villages Liberia has been active in the field of children’s rights and committed to children’s need and concerns in Liberia since 1981. We focus our work on children without parental care and children at risk of losing parental care and their communities. The organisation has a wide range of programmes in Monrovia, Buchanan and Juah Town, which include children’s villages, a youth facility, kindergartens and schools, a medical center and family strengthening programmes

Job Title: Guidance Counselor

He/she reports: HGIS Principal

Matrix managed by the Children’s Village Manager.

Position Demands

A Guidance Counselor must be a qualified person with strong professional training in teaching, social work/counseling or related fields and at least 5 years’ experience working with children in the school setting.

He/She must have a thorough knowledge of relevant SOS Policies including School Handbook, Mothers Handbook, Mothers and Aunties Training Manual, Quality Assurance Manual, Youth Policy Guidelines, etc.

He/She should possess leadership qualities energy and the commitment a participatory approach to problem solving

Must always strived to inspire and motivate students

Must work closely with SOS Child Protection Advisor and adopt/develop and establish diagnostic/assessment approach for children/students with behavioral challenges (This should consist of best practice treatment plans for behavior correction methodology) Counseling students, making appropriate referrals and follow-up on a need to be basis.

Working Relationship

Counseling students, making appropriate referrals and follow-up on a need to be basis..

Principal Responsibilities

  • To supervise and monitor the educational, psychosocial and child welfare issues of the HGIS students
  • To promote and strengthen good social relationship in the school
  • To plan and implement capacity building programs that will enhance students’ performance
  • To support and assist the school principal in matters regarding the students and to carry out special duties as assigned by the supervisor
  • School Guidance Counselor assists SOS Mothers in the monitoring of Child Development Plan
  • To preach, promote and teach discipline, self-esteem, appreciation, social ethics and responsibility
  • Develops and conduct stress management activities with Student
  • Keeps records for each family house and hold discussion whenever necessary with the parties concerned
  • Attendance of PTA sessions.

Make/submit periodic (situational-incidents/quarterly/annual) reports to School with cc copies to Child Protection Advisor for clinical/ administrative support/reviews

Accountability

The School Principal in collaboration with psychosocial oversight evaluates the performance of that are be taken into account are:

  1. The quality of social, professional and holistic learning environment in the School
  2. Student’s personal attitude
  3. General performance in execution of assigned duties
  4. Sense of direction of the students involvement in extra-curricular activities General feedback/observations

Qualification

Degree in Psychology from an institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the Ministry of Education in the following:

Demonstrated strengths in Counselling at the high school level.

3-5 years’ experience working in similar position.

Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.

Mastery of the Microsoft Office suite and online Learning Management Systems.

Child Protection & Child Safeguarding

Protect children from all forms of abuse, abandonment, exploitation, violence and discrimination.

Report any CS suspicion, concern, allegation or incident immediately: IF IN DOUBT, SPEAK OUT!

Act immediately: Failure to act may place the child in further danger.

Involve the right people at the right time: CS reports should be made to the CS team at programme level and/or to the respective line manager.
