Welthungerhilfe was founded in 1962 as the National Committee of the “Freedom from Hunger
Campaign” set up by the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). Today it is
one of the largest non-governmental organizations working in the area of development
cooperation and humanitarian aid in Germany. Non-profit making, non-denominational and
politically independent, the organization is run by a board of honorary members under the
patronage of the German President.
Welthungerhilfe is working in 39 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and campaigns
publically for fairer cooperation with developing countries. Its work is funded by private donations
from the population at large and public grants including USAID/OFDA, ECHO (FPA P-partner),
and works with funding from BMZ, German Foreign Office, DEVCO/Europe Aid, DFID, KFW
among many others.
Welthungerhilfe has been working in Liberia since 2003 focusing on Agriculture/Sustainable
Food and Nutrition Security, Infrastructure and WASH interventions.
As of 01 April 2019, Welthungerhilfe Liberia implements a KfW co-financed Health
System Strengthening project (–HSS), in the South East part of Liberia with a duration of
4 years.
Location: Based in Zwedru with regular travel to other field locations in South East of Liberia.
Duration: 1 year with possible extension
Job purpose: The Head Mechanic performs skilled mechanical, administrative and supervisory work in the
repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment belonging to the WHH Liberia. The work
involves documenting maintenance and repair needs of WHH and partners vehicles and
equipment; scheduling and assigning work orders; and reviewing and approving completed
work. The position is also responsible for maintaining computer files of work orders and for
performing actual repair duties as time permits.

Main
Responsibilities:
• Overall management workshop staff and carries out staff performance appraisal
• Overall management and proper operation of the workshop and all equipment and tools
• Prepares orders for WHH vehicles and equipment requiring maintenance and/or repair
work; schedules and assigns work orders to mechanics; maintains computer files of
work orders.
• Reviews completed work; operates vehicles or equipment to ensure work is complete
and approves release of vehicles or equipment if operating correctly.
• Diagnose problems with WHH equipment and vehicles.
• Adjusts and makes repairs to engines; adjusts or repairs valves, carburetors,
generators and related units; replaces all worn or defective parts.
• Repairs and adjusts hydraulic and vacuum operated systems; replaces hydraulic
motors, hoses and fittings; installs and adjusts power take offs.
• Tunes motors by adjusting or replacing needed parts; makes repairs to clutches,
transmissions, differentials, brakes, steering mechanisms and related units; transports
brake rotors and drums to outside service vendors to be turned.
• Replaces tie rods, springs, and shock absorbers; replaces alternators, regulators,
starters, wiring, gauges; rebuilds or adjusts components as required.
• Performs major and minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on power drive, brake,
steering, electrical, cooling, and related systems on light and heavy motorized
equipment and vehicles; installs rebuilt motors.
• Maintains records of serve and repair work performed on vehicles.
• Remains available to perform job functions on a 24-hour, call-in basis.
• Performs other related work as required.

Requirements and
Qualifications:
3 to 5 years of experience repairing automobiles and motorized equipment; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and
abilities
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of the standard practices, tools, materials and equipment used in the repair
and maintenance of a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.
• Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, and of the
standard mechanical components of automotive and related equipment.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of equipment repair
work and large-scale shop operations.
• Knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration.
• Knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines and hydraulic systems.
• Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance
and repair of automotive and related equipment.
• Skill in diagnosing problems with vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Ability to perform quality control checks on repaired equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and to develop meaningful reports
from those records.
• Ability to perform the manual labor associated with major mechanical repair work.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work
assignments.
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and
machinery including passenger vehicles, trucks, tractors, fire trucks, ambulances, jacks, engine
hoists, etc., and various mechanic’s equipment and tools such as arc welder and torch, engine
analyzer, metal lathe and hand tools. Requires the ability to maintain body equilibrium when
bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, reaching and/or stretching arms, legs or other parts of
body, and to physically maneuver over and/or upon varying terrain, surfaces or physical
structures. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up 25 pounds of
force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Heavy Work.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable,
functional, structural, or composite characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious
standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of work orders, service records, electrical
diagrams, technical books, etc. Requires the ability to prepare work orders, vehicle maintenance
reports, and etc. using prescribed format. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise,

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define
problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive
variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several
abstract and concrete variables.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to
follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a
variety of technical or professional languages, including automotive mechanical and electrical

using mechanical equipment and machinery; to operate motor vehicles.

control knobs, switches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
