The Urban Fabric Initiative (UFI) is a collaborative public space upgrading and community infrastructure project co-designed and co-constructed by residents and stakeholders in urban projects. It is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and is part of the UFI Network, with similar projects in Burkina Faso, Tunisia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Kenya. Managed by Mercy Corps, the Urban Fabric Initiatives is a two-year (May 2024 – May 2026) pilot project to be implemented in the Greater Monrovia (Lakpazee, Wood Camp, and Shoe Factory Communities) as part of the first initiatives designed under the framework of the AFD-funded Monrovia Integrated Development Project (MIDP). The overall objective is to significantly improve access, utilization, and management of public spaces, making them more resilient to the effects of climate change and ultimately enhancing the quality of life within the communities. The UFI will be implemented closely with the Ministry of Public Works and local and national authorities (including Monrovia City Council and Paynesville City Council).
Mercy Corps seeks a qualified Infrastructure Lead Consultant – an architect or engineer – to provide technical leadership and facilitate co-diagnosis, co-design, and co-construction processes of community corners within the project areas (Woodcamp, Shoe Factory, and Lakpazee in Monrovia). The Infrastructure Lead will oversee the designing, planning, and construction of public spaces for community animation under the Urban Fabric Initiative. The Consultant will:
The entire consultancy is expected to last ten months, commencing in October 2024 and ending in July 2025, with an anticipated 100 days of effort. The Consultant is expected to work at least two days weekly from the Mercy Corps office and 20 hours every week supporting the UFI project based on an approved work plan.
