Internews is an international non-profit organization that empowers media worldwide to give people news and information they need, the ability to connect and the means to make their voices heard. Internews is implementing the Liberia Media Empowerment Project (LMEP) in collaboration with the Center for Media Studies & Peacebuilding (CEMESP) and Local Voices Media Network Liberia (LVL) as co-applicants; and with Messengers of Peace (MOP) and journalRAGE as third-party partners.

The LMEP is co-financed by the European Union.

The overall objective of LMEP will be to contribute to enhancing the democratic governance of Liberia by empowering and building the capacities of the Liberian civil society and the media. The specific objective is to enhance freedom of expression by strengthening media professionalism and quality of delivery of information while promoting human rights and democracy. Three expected results will guide program activities:

Expected Result 1. Disinformation, fake news and hate speech are countered through media literacy and enhanced journalists’ capacities.
Expected Result 2. Human rights and democratic accountability are promoted through increased public awareness and investigative journalism.
Expected Result 3. The enabling environment for the promotion of freedom of opinion, expression, and access to information is fostered through dialogue, consultations, and advocacy.

For the implementation of the project, we are currently looking for qualified, competent, and motivated Liberian for the position of Journalism Program Officer.

Overview:
Overall responsibility for the Journalism Program Officer is to provide support in coordination on the work of the project and media partners, including planning and facilitation of journalism training and conduct of public events, directly track the progress and impact of LMEP for all the activities implemented; and provide the first comprehensive draft of quarterly, annual, and special reports; as well as other reports requested by Project Director.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinate the design and development of various journalism training curriculums
Provide training, mentoring and technical assistance to journalists under story production programs
Oversee media mentorship programs implemented by media partners
Provide advice and support to the human rights forums
Provide technical inputs for training and mentoring to partners, including quality assurance, reporting and M&E compliance
Ensure that relevant data is gathered, and any risks, challenges and lessons are well documented to promote accountability and learning, and to inform program design
Produce story outputs and success stories for training and mentoring activities, in close coordination with M&E team
Ensure timely reporting of activities and effective collaboration with partners
Build and maintain relationships with local media development organizations
And other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications, media studies or related field. Post-graduate qualification will be an advantage.

EXPERIENCE:
Experience managing media/journalism capacity-building and development activities
Minimum of five years journalism training experience
Experience in newsroom management at senior level a plus
Experience training and mentoring journalists or journalism students, as well as in developing training curriculum
Experience of conducting media training needs assessment
Good knowledge of designing basic, middle level and specialized journalism training
Good knowledge of planning and delivering training workshop
Experience in developing targeted journalism contents young reporters

SKILLS:
Strong critical thinking and writing skills
Proven leadership, interpersonal and networking skills with local and/or international organizations
