Laboratory Technician (Pediatric Outpatient Department, Ages 0–6)
Position Summary
The Laboratory Technician will manage and operate the pediatric outpatient laboratory, providing diagnostic services for children aged 0–6 years.
While phlebotomists will collect blood specimens, the Laboratory Technician will be responsible for processing samples, conducting laboratory tests, ensuring quality control, and supporting the pediatric care team in diagnosing and managing childhood diseases.
Key Responsibilities
Specimen Handling & Processing
- Receive blood specimens collected by phlebotomists, as well as other samples (urine, stool, swabs).
- Verify labeling, integrity, and suitability of specimens for testing.
- Prepare and process specimens according to laboratory protocols.
Laboratory Testing
- Perform routine diagnostic tests (hematology, microbiology, biochemistry, rapid diagnostic tests).
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Validate and record test results for clinical use.
Quality Assurance & Safety
- Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and infection prevention measures.
- Maintain calibration and quality control of laboratory instruments.
- Ensure proper storage and disposal of biohazardous materials.
Reporting & Documentation
- Record and report test results promptly to pediatrician and physician assistants
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and patient files.
- Assist in compiling laboratory statistics and reports for pediatric services.
Collaboration & Support
- Work closely with the pediatric care team to support diagnosis and treatment.
- Provide technical guidance to nurses and physician assistants regarding laboratory procedures.
- Participate in pediatric health outreach programs when laboratory services are required.
Family & Child Care
- Communicate clearly with parents/guardians about specimen collection procedures.
- Offer reassurance and guidance to families regarding laboratory processes.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent.
- Valid certification/licensure as a Laboratory Technician.
- At least three (3) years of experience in pediatric laboratory services preferred.
- Knowledge of common childhood diseases and related laboratory investigations.
- Strong technical, organizational, and communication skills.
