Job Summary
A Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing routine laboratory tests and procedures to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. The role involves handling specimens, operating laboratory equipment, and ensuring accurate and timely test results.
Key Responsibilities
Collect patient samples (blood, urine, stool, etc.)
Label and store specimens correctly
Ensure proper transportation of samples
Perform routine tests such as:
Hematology (e.g., full blood count)
Microbiology (e.g., culture and sensitivity)
Parasitology (e.g., malaria tests)
Biochemistry tests
Follow standard laboratory procedures and protocols
Operate laboratory machines and diagnostic equipment
Calibrate and maintain equipment regularly
Report faulty equipment
Follow quality control procedures
Ensure accuracy and reliability of test results
Participate in internal and external quality assessments
Maintain accurate laboratory records and logs
Enter and manage patient results
Report findings to clinicians promptly
Follow biosafety and infection control protocols
Use personal protective equipment (PPE)
Dispose of laboratory waste safely
Monitor laboratory supplies and reagents
Request restocking when necessary
Ensure proper storage of chemicals and reagents
Work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff
Communicate test results clearly and professionally
Qualifications and Requirements
Diploma or Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology/Science
Registered with a recognized regulatory body (where applicable)
Valid practicing license
1–5 years of experience (preferred, but not always required)
Skills and Competencies
Strong analytical and technical skills
Attention to detail and accuracy
Good communication skills
Ability to work under pressure
Knowledge of laboratory safety standards
Working Conditions
Hospital, clinic, or diagnostic laboratory setting
May involve shift work, weekends, and emergency duties
Exposure to biological samples and chemicals
