Project Description:

Serving Humanity for Empowerment and Development (SHED) is a Liberian NGO working for just and resilient society. SHED focuses on improving the livelihoods of targeted communities households and residents (rights holders) through poultry farming and vegetable production in the project concerned with this advert. In the same vein, SHED operates a semi-commercial level farm that functions as a social enterprise, which is committed to tackling local social problems in the poultry sector (eggs production), improving household and community nutritional intake, providing people with increased access to employment, improving their skills for employability and contributing to an overall green economy. SHED works closely with local duty bearers, the Ministry of Agriculture, other relevant government agencies, and the private sector through collaboration and partnership.

With funding from the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung BMZ), through Welthungerhilfe (WHH), SHED is seeking a Poultry Nutritionist for the purpose of effectively planning and implementing nutrition related activities of the project, which includes but not limited to analysing the nutritional elements/contents of produced poultry feed and providing a balance of nutrients that best meets the birds needs for growth, maintenance, egg production, etc. The Poultry Nutritionist will also create and balance rations of poultry feed to ensure all dietary needs are met for birds under his/her supervision.

Objectives and Tasks

Duties /responsibilities of the successful candidate will include but not limited to:

  • Participate in the design, development, and running an awareness campaign (door to door, jingles and radio talk show) on nutritional benefits of eggs, vegetables and corn that will be broadcast in standard English, plain Liberian English and local language;
  • Consider the varied nutritional needs of birds/chickens when formulating balanced feed rations;
  • Assess nutritional and caloric requirements based on the bird’s condition and type of physical activity such as performance, egg laying or overcoming nutritional deficiencies in cases of prior neglect;
  • Work in conjunction with poultry technicians, farm manager, and other animal professionals on research or teaching activities, including adoptive research with available local raw materials;
  • Undertake research and advise on raw material product selection, maintenance feeding programs and modification of diets;
  • Optimize feed specifications for egg laying at minimum cost to produce. This has two parts – establishing ideal nutrient specifications and then formulating the best combination of available ingredients –, which is constantly changing in nutrient value and price – to achieve these specifications;
  • Participate and provide technical input in project content planning, realization and monitoring of project activities in consultation with the project;
  • Ensure the timely submission of feed analytical reports;
  • Perform other duties as may be required

Qualification and Experience

  • At least four years of relevant experience with animal Nutrition work;
  • Ability to work independently, under pressure to ensure work is achieved to a high standard and in a timely manner;
  • An academic degree in Animal Science, Health Science, Nutrition, Agriculture and related disciplines;
  • Strong verbal and written command of English;
  • Good computer skills, especially MS Office;
  • Results oriented, highly analytical, team builder and good interpersonal relationship;
  • Excellent time-management, communication and organizational skills;
  • Familiarity with the Liberia context analysis.
