Job Brief

We are looking for a thorough Lead Investigator to study crime scenes and identify the guilt of a criminal. The post holders will collect evidence, search, interview, interrogate and apply various investigation methods. The successful candidate will be able to employ modern scientific techniques in order to determine and illuminate the truth about how a crime occurred. The incumbent will be required to travel to remote locations, at times for extended periods, to manage and conduct investigations.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Plan, organize, conduct and manage investigations of cases of alleged misconduct, malfeasance, mismanagement, waste of resources, abuse of authority, fraud, corruption, sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA), and violations of the SEGAL Employees Handbook.
  • Process crime scenes by performing scene recognition, scene documentation and evidence collection. Thoroughly document scenes and gather potential evidence (physical, specimens, documents, photographs, statements etc.) to send to crime lab
  • Examine and evaluate evidence for conflicting interpretations and resolve issues
  • Draft detailed investigative reports and be prepared to present evidence to court
  • Find that nuance or piece of information that will be the crucial break
  • Decide on the investigative tools to be employed; gather evidence; prepare testimony for tribunals; obtain and review pertinent documentation
  • Conduct interviews and take statements; analyse facts, determine findings and formulate recommended corrective measures and related disciplinary and jurisdictional actions; draft reports and communications
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues of the AML Security Department as well as SEGAL local Management, ensuring that investigative cases are properly handled and processed to relevant authority to achieve corporate goals and objectives

Requirements and skills

 

  • Proven working experience as Criminal Investigator
  • Hands-on experience with crime scenes analysis and forensic science
  • Proficient in interpreting evidence and reconstructing events
  • Ability to observe minute details and to produce detailed reports
  • In depth knowledge of criminal law, rules and legislation
  • Familiarity with all evidence types (e.g. circumstantial, direct, trace, hearsay etc.) and the rules governing their admissibility
  • Thorough understanding of the investigation process and the unique circumstances of each case
  • Strong analytical skills along with good interviewing and interrogation skills
  • Honest and ethical with high levels of integrity and confidentiality
  • B.Sc. Degree in forensic science, criminal law, criminology or relevant field. A first-level university degree in law or a field related to investigations in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted.

 

Work Experience

 

  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in investigatory work is required.
  • Experience in interviewing subjects and witnesses in the furtherance of investigations is required.
  • Experience in analysis of evidence and preparation of files of evidence is required.

 

Languages

 

  • For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. A working knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another language (local) of Liberia is desirable.

 

Assessment

 

  • Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview.
