Summary of Position
The Generator Technician will be responsible for managing all repairs and routine preventive maintenance of the PREVAIL Generators/equipment. The position will be expected to diagnose, repair, and report any operational issues identified during routine operations and testing of the generators. S/he will perform voltage testing on generators based on power surge and consumption requirements. S/he will re-wire, adjust and install control panels and voltage regulators, and will adjust speed controls and various operational settings as required.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
Description of Responsibilities
§ Diagnose and repairs minor problems with generators, transfer switches, switchgear, and other minor mechanical and electrical equipment.
§ In the absence of the service provider, performs routine preventive maintenance tasks such as lubrication and load testing.
§ Tests systems for efficiency and output and ensures the generators are producing the required power or load.
§ Fully participates in installation of new generators and other power generation systems.
§ Monitors gauges and meters to ensure that the generators are operating efficiently.
§ Performs routine maintenance checks and services on generators, such as oil changes and filter replacements.
§ Troubleshoots problems with electrical or mechanical equipment to identify the source of the issue.
§ Monitors fuel consumption and orders additional fuel as needed based on fuel consumption logs and reports.
§ Conducts daily fuel dipping to determine the generators fuel consumption levels.
§ Assists in preparing generators for installation as needed.
§ Responsible for the safe and proper operation of the Generators/equipment, using local automatic/manual modes of operation.
§ Starts, stops, synchronizes, and regulates power and reactive loads on turbine-generators.
§ Maintains power-plant operating log and prepares power generation and transmission equipment operating reports.
§ Prepares equipment malfunction reports, makes inspections and from observation, determines whether equipment is operating properly.
§ Keeps track of weekly or monthly generators service logs.
§ Inspects all generators service parts before and after service and makes sure that the right parts are replaced.
§ Responsible for the safe and proper operation of the Generator/ LN2 equipment, using local automatic/manual modes of operation, starts, stops, synchronizes and regulates power and reactive loads on turbine-generators.
§ Perform weekly, monthly, and Preventative maintenance on the LN2 systems used by PREVAIL.
§ Refill the high and low pressure rolling Dewars.
§ Recharge LN2 cryogenic freezers on a regular basis.
§ Monitor the LN2 production plant and cryogenic freezer daily, make adjustments and top-up with LN2 and Helium as needed.
§ Complete temperature and LN2 transfer and maintenance log in accordance with the applicable maintenance logs.
§ Issues clearances and performs switching and clearing of generator, transmission lines and station service switchgear.
§ Maintains power-plant and LN2 operating logs and prepares power generation and transmission equipment operating reports.
§ Prepares equipment malfunction reports, makes inspections and from observation, determines whether equipment is operating properly and repairs or makes the proper notifications for repair.
§ Operates power plant auxiliary systems such as HVAC systems, lighting systems, station battery and Performs maintenance of equipment.
§ Examines and tests electrical power distribution machinery and equipment.
§ Inspects records and logbook entries, and communicates with other plant personnel, in order to assess equipment operating status and make recommendations for necessary changes as needed.
§ Inspects and verifies completed work by contractors and vendors.
§ Serves as the primary point of contact for electricity outage calls and issues with the LN2 system. Call in necessary personnel during power outages and emergencies.
§ Serves as the primary point of contact for LN2 and generator vendors on all trouble shooting and maintenance issues.
§ Other duties as assigned.
Skills
§ Exceptional communication skills to work with team and customers directly on occasion.
§ Ability to write weekly updates and monthly reports on generator operations and fuel consumption and weekly or monthly generator service.
§ Must have computer skills in Word, Excel and PowerPoint and be able to transfer information from the logbook to the electronic.
Leadership Competencies
§ Able to work within a team of three or more staff and good team player.
Qualifications
§ Education: High School Graduate is a must; a Diploma / Certificate from a recognized Technical Vocational and Training (TVET) Institute in Machinery/ Electricity, or other related fields. An associate degree is an added advantage.
§ In-depth understanding of diesel engine and/or generator technology.
§ Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical issues on diesel generators.
§ Proficient with estimating the time required to complete tasks.
§ Ideal candidates will have 3-5 years of proven experience working as generator technicians in managing power generators.
