Who we are:

medica Liberia (mL), formerly medica mondiale Liberia, is a non-governmental women’s rights organization providing response and prevention services for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence survivors since 2006. We support survivors through a holistic, stress- and trauma-sensitive approach that integrates health, legal, psychosocial, and advocacy services, all grounded in feminist principles.

Project Background

medica Liberia (mL) is implementing Component B of the Spotlight Initiative under the leadership of UN Women. This component focuses on prevention, specifically transforming harmful gender norms, attitudes, and behaviors that perpetuate Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and harmful practices at individual and community levels. Under this intervention, mL will operationalize SASA! Together, a structured community mobilization methodology is designed to address the root causes of SGBV by shifting power relations and social norms. The approach will be implemented across 48 communities in selected counties, using a district-balanced model informed by population size, settlement patterns, and operational feasibility.

SASA! Together will be delivered through its four sequential phases—Start, Awareness, Support, and Action—to ensure sustained behavior change, strengthened leadership accountability, and collective community action, rather than one-off sensitization efforts. The intervention will be reinforced through the strengthening of community-based change agents and women’s groups, enabling local ownership and sustainability of gender-transformative processes beyond the project lifecycle.

This work contributes directly to Spotlight Initiative Outcome B2, which seeks to strengthen gender-equitable social norms, attitudes, and behaviors to prevent violence against women and girls. It also advances Output B2.1 by enhancing the capacity and accountability of traditional, religious, and community leaders to promote gender equality, prevent SGBV, and protect the rights of women and girls.

To effectively deliver this intervention, mL seeks to recruit qualified staff to support the implementation, coordination, and monitoring of Component B activities across targeted communities.
