Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician
Work Location: Phebe Hospital, Gbarnga Bong County, Liberia
Department/Project Name: Phebe-UNC CEPI-EPI Lassa Fever Study
Report to: Project Manager
Working Hours:8am-4pm, Weekdays, Rotating Weekends
Summary:
Phebe Hospital, the University of North Carolina (UNC), and the National Public Health Institute of
Liberia (NPHIL) are collaborating to conduct a longitudinal study of people living in communities in
Bong County where Lassa fever is prevalent to examine the incidence, prevalence, and clinical
features of Lassa fever. This is a 2 to 3-year project.
As detailed below, the Medical Laboratory Technician will be responsible for the collection of blood
and the analysis of biospecimens including blood, urine, and genital fluids. These activities will be
performed in accordance with protocol procedures, Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP), and
other relevant guidelines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Specimen collection:
a. Draw blood specimens via venipuncture from patients in the Phebe Isolation Unit
with suspected or confirmed Lassa fever; maintain responsibility for patient
identification, specimen labeling and collection verification.
b. Communicate in a professional and courteous manner with patients, family and
other medical personnel as necessary to obtain information for laboratory records,
explain procedures, clarify orders and communicate status.
c. Transport blood to research lab after collection using specified infection control
techniques
d. Follow strict adherence to personal protection procedures and infection control and
prevention following study-provided trainings
2. Laboratory analyses
a. Conduct all laboratory procedures in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP),
Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP), and Human Subject Protection (HSP)
b. Coordinate and participate in the performance and interpretation of complex
technical duties in support of medical laboratory testing; record determinations and
results for review by laboratory management and study staff.
c. Set up, evaluate and operate current and new equipment, instruments and
apparatus required for specific laboratory tests and assume adequate responsibility
to maintain operations including preventive maintenance.
d. Coordinate the preparation and quality assurance of chemicals, reagents, and other
materials as appropriate.
e. Evaluate collected laboratory data and prepare reports assessing accuracy,
completeness, timeliness, progress, adverse trends and appropriate
recommendations or conclusions.
f. Participate in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and
techniques (validation and verification studies).
g. Monitor Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Safety and Inspection Control practices
to assure compliance with internal and external regulations.
h. Maintain sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for performance
of duties; clean and maintain standard laboratory equipment.
i. Utilize laboratory information systems and software, as applicable.
j. Help coordinate participation for lab inspections and work with inspectors.
k. Provide advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation
and verification of specimen quality and test results.
3. Prepare work and call schedules in consultation with Lab Director.
4. Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written
communication skills.
5. Ensure that monthly reports and other statics are kept up to date.
6. Be available for rotating weekend work.
7. Wear proper clothing for laboratory work.
8. Use personal protection equipment as required and properly.
9. Perform other related duties as assigned; or provide such assistance as required by your
supervisor and or Laboratory Director.
Qualifications:
1. Required:
a. Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related field
b. Phlebotomy experience
c. Ability to work collaboratively with other team members and partners
d. Ability to demonstrate required dexterity, knowledge, and ability to complete
assigned laboratory tasks and skills, attention to detail and compliance with all
appropriate regulatory and safety requirements.
2. Desired:
a. Prior laboratory experience
b. Prior laboratory work in an isolation unit
c. Experience working with a group of researchers from varied disciplines
d. Fluency in spoken Kpelle
