BRAC Liberia has operated in this country since 2008, implementing social development programs across 15 counties and 77 branches implementing six programs; Agriculture, Food Security and Livelihoods (AFSL), Youth Empowerment, Ultra-Poor Graduation, Education, Health, and Microfinance.

The AFSL program aims to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition in Liberia through developing the capacity of smallholder farmers on climate smart agriculture practices, to build resilience while developing nutrition-sensitive agriculture and strengthening the market systems of small and medium entrepreneurs. AFSL program has reached approximately 312,500 direct and indirect beneficiaries and enabled 62,500 agriculture and poultry and livestock SHFs to increase their income and resilience and improve their nutrition outcome.

BRAC Liberia is an implementing partner on the WFP funded integrated Food Security (IFS) Project. This is a seven-months (January-June 2025) activity that will target Supporting local women and youth develop and enhance their technical capacity for alternative livelihood, including vegetable gardening, low-land rice farming to promote livelihood in addition to women involvement in VSLAs. The project will work to increase Agriculture Assets Revenue and Livelihoods for Communities in Grand Cape Mount, Nimba, Lofa, Grand Bassa and Bong counties. The IFS Project will emphasize livelihood activities to build the resilience of participants to seasonal shock.

BRAC Liberia is seeking applications from competent, dynamic and self-motivated individuals to fill the position of Program Assistants to support the attainment of the Integrated Food Security Activity project goals and objectives by providing field level support as appropriate.

Purpose

The Program Assistant (PA) will organize and lead field level activities and provide dedicated training and technical support to farmer groups. The PAs will primarily select, supervise, linking farmers groups to traders, processors, microfinance etc. The Field Assistants report to the Project Coordinator. This position will be based at the county/district level.

Key Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Primary selection of farmers group for crops, and Village Saving Loan Association.
  • Identify the local cropping patterns from the selected areas.
  • Facilitate farmers training at community level.
  • Establish-a well-developed group plots for dissemination of climate smart agriculture and good agricultural practices to enhance farm yields and incomes for local farmers.
  • Organize different programs (i.e., meeting, workshop, training as per instruction of supervisor/management.
  • Tracking down of crops/livestock production and facilitating bulk marketing through farming as a business approach.
  • Monitoring field visits of farmer groups and providing them advisory services.
  • Coordinate with the local government, NGOS and other development partners. Identify the proper agro inputs with brand name, variety and price.
  • Maintain the official documents like registers, files properly and always check the store and keep stock balance up to date.
  • Supervise inputs distribution and make requisition as and when required.
  • Prepare a weekly report and send it to the project Coordinators.
  • Carry out any other duties assigned by the supervisor/management.

Safeguarding Responsibilities

  • Act as a key source of support, guidance and expertise on safeguarding for establishing a safe working environment at the community level,
  • Read, understand, practice, promote and endorse the issues of safeguarding policy among team members and ensure the implementation of safeguarding standards in every course of action,
  • Follow the safeguarding reporting procedure in case any reportable incident takes place and encourage others to do the same

 

Academic Qualifications:

  • Diploma/associate degree in general agriculture or relevant subject.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in climate smart agriculture, nutrition sensitive agriculture, poultry/livestock program implementation, market linkage, VSLA preferably in an NGO;
  • Proven experience in identifying agricultural, livestock production and marketing related problems for small scale farmers and conducting different events .
  • Proven experience in working with partner NGOs and in establishing effective linkages with different input/ service providers, the private sector actors and GO/ NGO officials.
  • Proven experience in training facilitation skills, communication skills with different stakeholders, report writing skills etc.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with UN funded projects is preferred.

 

Required Skills, Competencies & Knowledge:

  • Facilitate technical support to smallholder farmers, and other value chain actors.
  • Significant exposure to agriculture, livestock, VSLA, social business and development programs in Liberia.
  • Proven track record of working with farmer organizations/ cooperatives and challenging field locations (both rural and urban).
  • Computer skills: Microsoft office word, excel etc.
  • Proven ability to perform under pressure and prioritize with multiple competing demands.
  • Familiarity with BRAC’s work and/or working experience on livelihood and food security programs.

Others:

  • Ability to travel frequently within project targeted community in Liberia
  • English – Fluent (both written and verbal), local language is desired.
