Who We Are:

medica Liberia (mL), formerly medica mondiale Liberia, is a non-governmental women’s rights organization working to support women and girls affected by sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Since 2006, Medica Liberia has implemented impactful programs in Liberia’s southeastern regions, recently expanding to Montserrado and Margibi counties with support from the German Government and other donors.

Project Background:

The ‘Strengthening Action Response and Services for SGBV in South-eastern Liberia, (STARS 4 SGBV) project is a three years project funded the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ireland through Irish Aid Liberia. The project focuses on scaling up prevention, response, and support services for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in Grand Gedeh, Sinoe, and River Gee counties. The initiative aims to transform harmful gender norms, prevent violence against women and girls, and strengthen essential services for survivors.

Position Title: Psychosocial Counselors

Reports: Project Manager

Job Summary:

The Psychosocial Counselors will collaborate with Community Mobilizers and SGBV Protection Networks to strengthen SGBV protection activities and facilitate effective case management for SGBV survivors using a Stress and Trauma and Sensitive Approach.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Strengthen and maintain the SGBV protection network within assigned communities.
• Conduct regular visits to support Community Mobilizers and SGBV protection networks.
• Recommend awareness-raising topics to mL senior staff based on emerging community needs.
• Identify and report cases of SGBV, SEA, harmful traditional practices, and other conflicts, including compromised cases.
• Provide counseling to SGBV survivors and refer them to appropriate services such as counseling, medical, legal, and protection services offered by mL.
• Ensure systematic reporting from SGBV Protection Networks to mL for data compilation
• Collaborate with Senior Psychosocial Counselors on SGBV cases encountered during outreach for effective and timely responses.
• Seek guidance from reproductive health and para-legal trainers on case management and sensitization topics.
• Prepare and submit weekly operational reports.
• Develop and submit weekly and monthly work plans
• Perform other duties as required to ensure the successful implementation of the project.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field.
• A diploma in these fields with extensive relevant experience may be considered.
• At least 3 years of professional experience in psychosocial support, counseling, or SGBV case management.
• Experience working with survivors of SGBV, SEA, and harmful traditional practices in community settings.
• Proven experience in community mobilization, capacity building, and working with protection networks or similar structures.
• Understanding of stress and trauma-sensitive approaches in counseling.
• Knowledge of SGBV, SEA, and protection principles, including case management and referral pathways.
• Ability to prepare clear and concise reports and work plans.
• Proficiency in using basic office software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel).
• Fluency in English and familiarity with local languages spoken in River Gee, Sinoe, or Grand Gedeh is an advantage.
