DURATION: An initial one year, with possibility of extension

SCOPE OF THE ROLE:

Internews Network is implementing a USAID-funded Media Activity program in Liberia aimed to enhance the human and institutional capacity of the media sector while advocating for and maintaining current media freedoms to reliably carry out responsible journalism, drive reforms, and increase revenue.

The Senior Journalism Trainer will lead and advice on Internews work with media partners including community radio stations (CRSs) in designing tailored journalism training materials throughout the implementation of USAID Liberia Media Activity. Successful candidate for this role will also work as a member of technical journalism team in the media and information ecosystems development activities of Internews and partners such as, but not limited to, information ecosystems assessment, training, content production/production support and mentoring activities for media CSOs part of the Media Activity.

The Senior Journalism Trainer will report to USAID Media Activity Senior Advisor

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads the design and development of various journalism training curriculums for USAID Media Activity
  • Provides training, mentoring and technical assistance to community radio station managers, journalists, and talk show hosts
  • Leads mentor efforts for both female journalism trainers and mentees
  • Supports radio stations via mentoring and technical assistance at two media resource centers on journalism quality
  • Supervises two embedded regional technical advisors based in the counties
  • Oversees the media mentorship program for women journalists
  • Advises on the design and implementation of Media Activity small grants scheme to media outlets, and equipment grants
  • Provides support and ideas on sharing of content between community radio stations
  • Promotes the women’s empowerment in radio media outlets.
  • Provides advice and support to the organization of community media forums women rights involving women led CSOs
  • Provides technical inputs for training and mentoring to partners, including quality assurance, reporting and M&E compliance
  • Provides mentoring for journalists under story production support schemes or collaborations
  • Produce story outputs and success stories for the training and mentoring activities, in close coordination with M&E team
  • Ensure timely reporting of activities and effective collaboration with relevant Internews staff
  • Build and maintains relationships with local media development organizations

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications or related field. Post-graduate qualification will be an advantage.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience managing media/journalism capacity building and development activities
  • Minimum of 8-10 years journalism training experience
  • Experience in newsroom management at senior level a plus
  • Experience training and mentoring journalists or journalism students, as well as in developing training curriculum
  • Experience in providing support to women journalism training
  • Knowledge and experience of radio management
  • Good computer skills including radio editing software
  • Experience of conducting media training need assessment
  • Good knowledge of designing basic, middle level and specialized journalism training
  • Good knowledge of planning and delivering training workshop
  • Has experience in developing targeted journalism contents young reporters
