Job purpose

Like the Classroom Teacher, the Sign Language Interpreter will be responsible for the out bringing of the student’s interest in the educational areas and learning development. Through listening and passing down information to students by means of interpretation.

Key activities

1. Support students in the process of learning and development: • Create daily and long-range lesson plan in accordance with prescribe curriculum when necessary.

• Provide instructions to each student by interpreting from the classroom teacher to the students when necessary.
• Create and distribute education activities from lesson contents to students when necessary.
• Provide lesson aids visual / audio to facilitate learning when necessary.
• Maintain an organized classroom by setting ground rules, tidy, friendly classroom environments (classroom management). • Converts spoken language into sigh language.
• Help deaf and hard of hearing or hearing impaired understand what is being communicated either in a group setting or one on one,

2. Oversee each student

• Observe and understand student’s behaviour and counsel them or find disciplinary action if necessary.
• Ensure all students with learning difficulties given more time and chance to participate in class activities.
• Work with student’s government of the institution. • Conduct social and health clubs in the school.

3. Working with Policies,

• Support the principal by abiding with all policies (HR, Child Protection and code of conduct from Ministry of Education.) 4. Monitor students’ performance
• Ensure that testing for students in line with set objectives are met.
• Checking students work and evaluating students’ performance.

5. Oversee student’s wellbeing and engagement • Provide counselling support to students facing problem, (psychosocial, medical, difficulties in learning).

• Carryout student’s engagement surveys and ensure students full participation.

6. Reporting and accountability

• Report to work in time and complete eight working hours per day. • Prepare and submit daily lesson plan and medium range (long range) lesson plan to VP as required.
• Work with the principal for guidance in preparing lesson plans and lesson notes.

Internal relationships: Students and another coworker, MML

External relationships: Ministry of Education and Liberia National

Association of the deaf.

Reports to: Head Teacher (principal)

Direct reports: Registrar and Vice principal

Minimum 2 years of experience in teaching deaf or hard of hearing students.

Demonstrate good knowledge of thesubject matter.

Experience in managing students

Experience in planning anddeveloping lessons.
