SOS Children’s Villages Liberia has been active in the field of children’s rights and committed to children’s need and concerns in Liberia since 1981. We focus our work on children without parental care and children at risk of losing parental care and their communities. The organisation has a wide range of programmes in Monrovia and Juah Town, which include children’s villages, a youth facility, kindergartens and schools, a medical center and family strengthening programmes

 

Job Title————— Social Workers for SOS Children’s Villages Monrovia and Grand Bassa County.

HE/SHE reports—— Local Social Services Coordinator.

Matrix managed by the CVP Manager Monrovia & Grand Bassa County.

 

Position summary

· The field worker will take part in the day-to-day implementation of the family strengthening programme she/he will be responsible to assess the children/family situation and support the family development planning process. Through regular family visits, s/he will support guide and counsel families to ensure children’s essential needs are met. S/he will also have to organize various group activities for the beneficiaries and communities related to child rights and child care issues and build capacities of community partners and volunteers to offer similar support. Working closely with the community, the field worker will report and be under the responsibility of the Local Social Services Coordinator.

  • Involve the community in the implementation of the programme
  • Contribute to the realisation of child rights in general as well as the development of the organisation in this regard in particular.
  • Excellent organizational and communicative skills.
  • Honesty integrity trustworthiness and ability to treat all information in the outmost confidence.
  • A strong firm approach dealing with difficult personnel e.g. staff and parents/guardians.
  • Is directly responsible to the Local Social Services Coordinator.

Principal Responsibilities

· Support the provision of services to beneficiary families

a) Assist with the initial assessment of potential beneficiaries, as required by the Services coordinator.

b) Establish and regularly review family development plans (FDP) with each family to ensure children’s essential survival and developmental needs are met in the short and long term and to ensure care-givers/families understand the aim of the programme and contribute/work towards their self-reliance.

c) Organise and facilitate relevant services offered through the programme, including such activities as care-givers capacity building in child care, support groups, psycho-social support to the programme beneficiaries and child recreational activities.

· Keep up-to-date information regarding beneficiaries and services provided

a) Establish beneficiary filing system and keep up-to-date.

b) Fill/update the family strengthening programme’s information system database.

c) Keep record of all services and trainings provided.

d) Report on beneficiary/family progress and provide necessary information needed for the programme reporting

· Involve the community in the implementation of the programme.

a) Build positive relationships with the community and/or local authorities.

b) Support the child welfare committee/community volunteers with trainings linked to the programme’s implementation.

c) Follow up and guide the community volunteers’ work.

· Contribute to the realisation of child rights in general as well as the development of the organisation in this regard in particular.

a) Always put the interest of the child first

b) Take action or report to the adequate structure any child’s rights violation cases

c) Keep track of child rights issues in general as well as current social development issues and trends relevant to the organisation’s mission.

 

Child Protection & Child Safeguarding

  • Protect children from all forms of abuse, abandonment, exploitation, violence and discrimination.
  • Report any CS suspicion, concern, allegation or incident immediately: IF IN DOUBT, SPEAK OUT!
  • Act without delay: Failure to act may place the child in further danger.
  • Involve the right people at the right time: CS reports should be made to the CS team at programme level and/or to the respective line manager.

 

Qualifications/Competencies required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology or its relevant.
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant work experience in the field.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Excellent command of the English language and highly developed communication skills both written and spoken.
  • Positive and professional approach: highly organised, deadlines conscious, able to work independently, using initiative, keeping commitments and leading a team.
  • Good knowledge of children’s rights.
  • Very developed computer skills especially MS Office and Excell.
