Historical Write-up of the Du Port Road Memorial

  1. Background

Talking Drum Studio: Liberia Peace Center is implementing the MemoriaLiberia Project, funded by the Africa Transitional Justice Legacy Fund. This initiative aims to promote transitional justice, historical dialogue, and societal healing in Liberia. As part of this effort, the project is developing the Du Port Road Memorial Learning Corner to ensure the accurate documentation and preservation of historical events associated with the site. These historical accounts will serve as the foundation for exhibits, educational materials, and information panels, contributing to public awareness and remembrance.

 

The Du Port Road Memorial is a significant site tied to Liberia’s conflict history, representing a place of remembrance for those affected by past atrocities. To ensure accuracy and credibility, the MemoriaLiberia Project will engage a consultant to research and document historical facts associated with this location. The consultant will also participate in an expert round table session to present and validate the gathered historical information.

 

  1. Objective

The primary objective of this consultancy is to:

  • Conduct historical research and compile factual and verifiable information about the Du Port Road Memorial.
  • Develop a comprehensive historical write-up that will serve as a foundational document for educational and memorialization purposes.
  • Participate in an expert round table session to present and validate historical facts surrounding the site.

 

  1. Scope of Work

The consultant will be responsible for:

  1. Research and Documentation (10 days):
    1. Conduct primary and secondary research on the historical events linked to the Du Port Road Memorial.
    2. Engage with survivors, historians, and relevant stakeholders to gather oral testimonies and historical records.
    3. Compile verified historical facts in a structured and narrative format for use in exhibits, information panels, and educational materials.
    4. Ensure the write-up aligns with historical accuracy, sensitivity, and memorialization principles.

 

  1. Presentation and Validation (1 day):
  2. Participate in an expert round table session to present the historical findings.
  3. Engage with historians, academics, and community representatives to review and validate the documented historical facts.
  4. Incorporate feedback and necessary revisions based on expert input.

 

  1. Deliverables

The consultant is expected to deliver the following:

 

  • A detailed historical write-up (10-15 pages) covering key historical events, narratives, and factual accounts related to the Du Port Road Memorial.
  • A summary document (2-3 pages) with key facts for use in educational and public exhibits.
  • Presentation slides for the expert round table discussion.

 

 

  • A final version of the historical document, incorporating feedback from the expert round table session.

 

  1. Timeline and Duration
  • Total Consultancy Duration:11 days (10 days for research and documentation, 1 day for presentation and validation).
  • Research Expected Start Date: May 5, 2025

 

  1. Required Qualifications and Experience

The consultant should possess the following qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in History, Social Sciences, Transitional Justice, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in historical research, documentation, or memorialization projects.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills, with experience in developing historical narratives for public education.
  • Familiarity with Liberia’s conflict history and transitional justice processes.
  • Experience working with civil society organizations, research institutions, or historical memorial projects is an advantage.

 

  1. Supervision and Reporting

The consultant will report to the MemoriaLiberia Project Manager and work closely with the Du Port Road Memorial Community Leadership.
