Job Description
The UL‐JFKMC Academic Office will be headed by a Director.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be a respected national leader in their field of training including possession of
national or regional board or specialty certification as appropriate and a current Liberian practicing license,
and will:
Have a track record in medical education including a minimum of 5 years of experience as faculty in
a training program
Have a minimum of 5 years of senior academic administrative experience
Have a successful track record in establishing new health professions’ training programs
Possess a strong track record in establishing clinical training coordination functions (scheduling, log
booking, rotation placements, etc.)
Be familiar with program accreditation requirements across multiple programs including general and
specialist physicians, nursing/midwifery, physician assistants, laboratory technicians, etc.
Be prepared to devote 40 hours per week (full‐time) to fulfill the roles and responsibilities of the
position
Possess integrity and other exemplary character traits to provide strong leadership
Be willing to travel regionally and internationally to promote or advance the objectives of the office
Proven track record in securing significant resources required to sustain training program needs
(proposal development, donor relationships, budget development)
Roles and responsibilities will include:
Liaise with training programs to ensure coordination of clinical rotations and on‐call schedules
Provide direct oversight of training programs and their leadership to achieve or maintain full
accreditation and to achieve desired educational outcomes
Ensure that learning and work environments are conducive for clinical training, as well as safe and
quality patient care
Establish preceptorship training for hospital‐based clinical faculty of various training programs
Implement institutional and training program‐specific policies, standards and protocols
Oversee monitoring and evaluation of training programs, faculty and trainees
Oversee establishment of new specialty, subspecialty or advanced training programs including
training program size, length of training and training sites
Select and/or approve training program coordinators in collaboration with UL HR and JFKMC or
others as relevant to the specialty
Enforce faculty recruitment standards and oversee performance reviews
Set trainee recruitment and advancement standards in collaboration with training program
leadership
Coordinate with UL Center for Teaching, Learning, and Research and other relevant entities to
promote faculty development and research activities.
Establish a medical education committee.
Mobilize resources to support training programs and facilities.
Provide annual reports to UL and JFKMC administration.

1 BACKGROUND
With reference to the relationship between the University of Liberia (UL) and its teaching hospital, John F.
Kennedy Medical Center (JFKMC), these two entities have agreed to establish an Academic Office which will
be responsible for coordinating clinical training for medical students, resident physicians, and all other
health professionals in training through the UL College of Health Sciences.
2 OBJECTIVES
Develop academic systems for the administration/implementation of medical student clinical
training, physician specialty and subspecialty training programs based at JFKMC.
Serve as a hub for coordination of clinical training for midwifery, nursing, lab technician and other
health professions’ training programs within the UL College of Health Sciences.
Proactively organize clinical training including administrative and logistical matters, e.g.:
o clinical rotation scheduling and logbook implementation
o academic facilities/infrastructure improvements for accreditation
o preceptor training and organization
o examinations administration other than postgraduate examination
o trainee well‐being issues
o faculty human resources, in conjunction with UL HR (hiring, promotion, retention)
Enforce qualification standards; recruit, train and retain faculty for clinical training programs in
collaboration with JFKMC.
Ensure quality and standards of training programs to meet/maintain accreditation requirements.
Collaboratively engage with and facilitate synergistic relationships among training institutions (e.g.
AMD, TNIMA, Phebe Paramedical Training Program) including funding, faculty, and clinical programs.
Establish MOUs and agreements with training institutions for shared responsibility of training
programs; review and evaluate MOUs/agreements on a routine basis.
Ensure clinical facilities and rotations meet curricular objectives.
Identify opportunities for and promote interdisciplinary education and team‐based care.
3 COMPOSITION & STAFFING
The UL‐JFKMC Academic Office will be headed by a Director working in close collaboration with the UL Vice
President for Health Sciences as well as the Deputy CEO for Medical Services (Chief Medical Officer) and
Deputy CEO for Administration of JFKMC. The Academic Office Director will be recruited and appointed by
the University of Liberia in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer of JFK with a primary reporting line to
the UL Vice President for Health Sciences and a secondary reporting line to the CEO of JFKMC.
Additional staff will be hired in a phased approach. A medical education committee, chaired by the Chief
Academic Officer, should be established to support the functions of the academic office and should include
training program directors and heads of department of all specialties (nursing/midwifery, post graduate
medical training programs, lab technician), representatives of LCPS, AMD (clinical coordinator), as well as
trainee representatives (residents, fellows, or students).The Academic Office will be physically located at
JFKMC.
