TITLE: Village Saving and Loan Officer: Volunteers for Sustainable Development in Africa
LOCATION: Head Office in Monrovia, with extensive travel in rural areas where VOSIEDA has her activitiesJOB TYPE: Full Time (Initial 1-year renewal based on performance)
ROLE PURPOSE:

The Training and VSLA Officer leads community-based training, capacity strengthening, and Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) implementation to improve household resilience, financial inclusion, livelihood skills, and women’s economic empowerment. The role plans and facilitates high-quality training, establishes and mentors VSLA groups, supports group governance and recordkeeping, monitors performance and inclusion, and ensures timely reporting, safeguarding, and alignment with VOSIEDA project objectives, donor requirements, and community needs.

Reports to: Program Manager

Supervises: Community Facilitators, VSLA Volunteers, or Enumerators as assigned

 

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND:

Founded in 2000, Volunteers for Sustainable Development in Africa (VOSIEDA) is a Liberian nonprofit organization and a network of development professionals working to promote prosperity, reduce extreme poverty, and strengthen peace and stability in Liberia and the West Africa Mano River Union Basin region. VOSIEDA’s work focuses on saving the planet and fighting extreme poverty among women, youth, children, and other excluded groups. We advance community solutions to address development challenges and empower local people to care for nature that sustains all lives.

VOSIEDA works across five signature programs to empower and support local communities to promote sustainable development to end extreme poverty, its root causes, and consequences in Liberia and West Africa’s Mano River Basin region, including 1). Climate Change & Environmental Sustainability, 2) Food Security & Livelihoods Enhancement, 3) Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality, 4) Governance & Social Development,

5) Media & Civic Society Strengthening.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

 

· Mobilize and facilitate the formation of Village Savings and Loan Associations in target communities.

· Train VSLA members on group governance, financial literacy, record keeping, and loan management.

· Provide ongoing technical support to VSLAs to ensure effective operations and sustainability.

· Monitor group performance, track savings and loan activities, and prepare regular progress reports.

· Promote gender equity and inclusion within VSLA groups.

· Strengthen linkages between VSLAs and formal financial institutions where appropriate.

· Support community awareness campaigns on savings culture and responsible borrowing.

· Document lessons learned and share best practices to improve program delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

· Diploma Bachelor’s degree in Community Development, Microfinance, Business Administration, or related field.

· Minimum of 2–3 years of experience working with community-based savings and loan schemes, cooperatives, or microfinance projects.

· Strong facilitation and training skills, with experience in adult learning methodologies.

· Good understanding of financial literacy, group dynamics, and community mobilization.

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups.

· Experience in rural or community development programs is highly desirable.

· Ability to ride a motorbike and willingness to travel frequently to field sites are assets.
