Teach For Liberia Overview

Teach For Liberia (“TFL”) is a nationwide movement in pursuit of educational equity in Liberia. TFL was founded with a vision to ensure that all Liberian children have access to an excellent education. We strive to address Liberia’s educational crisis by enlisting Liberia’s most promising leaders as fellows who will teach for two years in some of the most high-need schools. After the fellowship we envision that our Alumni will drive impact across sectors as lifetime advocates of education reform in Liberia with a goal of reaching 125,000 students by 2025. TFL is a partner of Teach For All- a global network of independent social enterprises that promote educational opportunity.

TFL is seeking a visionary, entrepreneurial, strategic, and mission-driven Chief Executive Officer who will be charged with defining and overseeing the strategic direction and daily operations of Teach for Liberia. The work of the CEO is centered around the ability to invest and engage external stakeholders as vital partners in this work and to develop a high-performing, results-oriented team. Additionally, the CEO will be responsible for personnel management, organizational growth, and financial sustainability that will allow Teach for Liberia to implement its mission and reach ambitious goals. As CEO, this individual will report directly to the Board of Directors and will manage the staff leadership team.

Position Summary

The CEO will lead and drive the overall organizational vision, strategy and goals. They will build a national and advisory board; invest external stakeholders into the program and act as the coach and mentor for all vertical heads to solve business and people problems amicably.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Leadership

  • Work in jointly with the Board of Directors and staff in setting the strategy and priorities for the organization
  • Build and cultivate results-driven board with members who have the influence and networks necessary to help achieve organization goals
  • Represent the work of Teach For Liberia to the full board, and to other external stakeholders as appropriate
  • Build and enforce a strong core values based organizational culture among participants, alumni and staff
  • Motivate and inspire participants, alumni, and staff to work towards having a transformational impact on the challenge of education inequity in Liberia

External Engagement and Outreach

  • Build an understanding of and support for the program in Liberia amongst a diverse, strategic group of stakeholders, including national and local governments, prospective donors and other non-profit organizations
  • Secure and grow a sustainable, diversified funding base that will include financial support from the public and private sectors
  • Secure teaching placements for the program participants aligned with a strategy for the program’s growth over time
  • Bolster participant and staff recruitment through high-impact visits, conversations, and events
  • Serve as the external representative of the organization to build the program’s reputation and brand
  • Managing media relations to involve the public and the relevant stakeholders

 

Operations and Resource Management

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of Teach For Liberia’s budget, financial policies and procedures.
  • Develop the human resources and management practices to lead staff to set and achieve ambitious goals within their functional areas
  • Set the organizational policy and benefits for Teach For Liberia employees

Programmatic Leadership

  • Hire and lead the team of high-performing teams and second line leadership for the organization toward achieving ambitious goals.
  • Manage and coach team to achieve high results across each of the programmatic components.
  • Facilitating the cross-team collaboration and aligning everyone’s goals to student achievement and Fellow satisfaction.
  • Be responsible for overall staff satisfaction and their commitment toward the mission

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • 10 years minimum experience preferred

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have a proven track record of managing a large team and a growing program
  • Must be highly motivated leader who excels in an entrepreneurial environment and wants to make a material impact on the education sector
  • Must demonstrate high level of sense of possibility
  • Desire and ability to navigate complex situations, problem solve and make sound decisions
  • Ability to develop strategic plans in a start-up environment and execute successfully against that plan
  • Must be an inspiring and effective written and oral communicator to a wide array of audiences
  • Must be results-oriented, highly competent individual with exceptional strategic-thinking, organizational, management and communication skills
  • Must believe strongly in the potential impact and collaborative nature of the Teach For All Network
  • The ideal candidate is passionate about Teach for Liberia’s mission of closing the achievement gap
