Teach For Liberia

Company Detail

WHAT WE DO

Teach For Liberia addresses the educational crisis in Liberia by recruiting passionate college graduates/professionals, who we provide with tailored, high quality training for placement in rural and urban primary schools for two years. Our alumni go on to become school, district, and community leaders, advocates, and entrepreneurs who work together with other stakeholders to change a system that leaves so many Liberian children behind. Teach For Liberia is working to reach 125,000 Liberian children by 2025 – greatly improving their life prospects through placing 700 high quality teachers in 90 local school and communities.

OUR HISTORY

The education system in Liberia is being revitalized after a prolonged period of war-induced coma. People talk about making a difference, but healing this damage is something that requires a collective of change makers. In 2010, after being in close contact with Teach For All, our co-founders Mr. Desmond Diggs and Dr. Jobila Williams-Sy decided to BE the change. While working on establishing Teach For Liberia as a registered non-profit in 2012, Desmond unceasingly collected data from the Ministry of Education and taught at local schools to understand problems facing Liberian education. However, Teach For Liberia’s fundraising efforts initially proved to be unsuccessful both locally and internationally. As a result of this, Desmond left the country to complete a graduate degree in International Education Development and acquire more education specific knowledge and network. Upon his return, he and Dr. Williams-Sy eagerly regrouped to develop a new strategic plan. This strategic plan involved a partnership with the Ministry of Education with the intention of combining best practices to ensure that the reach of the organization’s impact is widened. An MoU was then signed and it contributed to propelling forward Teach For Liberia, and today we are recruiting leadership driven teachers and placing them in underserved communities to impact the lives of more Liberian children, with a goal of reaching 125,000 students by 2025.
