Job purpose

The Security and Risk Manager is responsible for ensuring we adequately manage and respond to security threats and other risks within our programme. This includes ensuring adequate arrangements are in place to safeguard Mary’s Meals premises, assets and people; and that all security procedures are followed.

The Security and Risk Manager plays a critical role in ensuring Mary’s Meals effectively manages crisis events and incidents relevant to our operations. They also act as the focal point for receiving and responding to concerns of suspected wrongdoing within our programme.

Key activities

Security & risk

  • Conduct regular site inspections (including offices, warehouses, expat residences and school visits) to ensure appropriate security measures are in place and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are being observed.
  • Report on weaknesses/issues identified through inspections to management and take action/follow up with staff to ensure the issues are rectified promptly.
  • Perform regular testing over security equipment (e.g. CCTV, panic buttons, etc) to confirm they are suitably operational and ensure timely action is taken to rectify any issues.
  • Monitor Mary’s Meals assets and equipment (e.g. vehicles, vehicle equipment, first aid boxes, etc.) to ensure adequate safeguards are in place and items are maintained to the specified standard.
  • Regularly review all existing SOPs to ensure that they remain appropriate to our operations and reflective of current working practices.
  • In liaison with senior management and MMI, develop and/or manage implementation of new security & risk policies and SOPs.
  • Provide relevant training to fellow members of staff to ensure that SOPs and other security & risk requirements are adhered to (e.g. fire safety or sat phone use).
  • Arrange and oversee the training programmes delivered for staff by external providers (e.g. defensive driving) to ensure that SOPs and other security & risk requirements are adhered to.
  • Provide a security briefing to visitors and new members of staff.
  • Oversee the contract with any external security company, including regular monitoring of performance and resolution of issues arising.
  • Act as the recipient and first responder of security alerts from any security systems, alerting relevant local and MMI staff as necessary.
  • Provide ad hoc advice on security matters as they arise.

Crisis and incident management

  • Act as the focal point for reporting on all security and risk incidents in order to provide timely and measured guidance and support to staff on our response.
  • Perform timely site visits as necessary to investigate and provide support on emerging incidents.

  • Prepare detailed security incident/investigation reports and share with the Country Director, relevant local staff and the MMI Risk & Assurance team as required within the stipulated timelines.
  • Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date records on all incidents, including monitoring and following up on the completion of any actions agreed in response.
  • Raise awareness of the need to report incidents with staff and provide training as and when necessary.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of local security and risk issues (including external events) and raise any emerging risks relevant to our operations with management and MMI Risk and Assurance for consideration.
  • Support the Country Director in ensuring adequate maintenance and implementation where required of the Disaster and Crisis Management Plan, including:

o ensuring the contents remain appropriate and up-to-date.

o securing appropriate membership of the Crisis Management Team (including any sub-groups).

o performing periodic scenario testing.

o purchasing of all items required to deliver the Plan.

o maintaining the Constant Companion.

  • Familiarize and coordinate with local authorities and law enforcement where crises/incidents arise.

Whistleblowing

  • Regularly monitor, triage and respond to concerns of suspected wrongdoing within our programme that are raised through our whistleblowing routes.
  • Complete thorough and timely investigations into genuine concerns, maintaining confidentiality throughout, and provide detailed investigation reports to relevant local and MMI staff for consideration.
  • Maintain adequate, sensitive and timely communication with whistleblowers throughout the whistleblowing process.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and up-to-date records of all concerns raised through our whistleblowing routes.
  • In liaison with MMI Risk & Assurance, raise awareness and understanding of whistleblowing processes locally (both internally and externally).

Qualifications, skills and experienceEssentialDesirable
A degree/diploma in security/risk management or a relevant subject, or equivalent level of professional experience
Experience of advising on security & risk management
Experience in crisis/incident management
Experience in conducting investigations
Excellent inter-personal skills, with solid track record in persuading and influencing others
Effective communication skills, including fluent written and spoken English
Analytical ability and the capacity to think objectively and demonstrate sound judgement
Excellent attention to detail and drive to produce high quality, accurate outputs
Ability to take a flexible approach to managing and prioritising a high workload and multiple tasks in a fast paced environment with tight deadlines.
Experience of training and coaching others
Computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Office
