Teach For Liberia Leadership Development Fellowship

Teach For Liberia’s (TFL) mission is to ensure that every Liberian child is afforded an excellent education. TFL recruits college graduates and trains them as teachers for a two-year commitment to work in rural and urban areas in Liberia. Upon successful completion, alumni are supported through professional development and educational advancement opportunities to continue to drive the impact of our work. We are enlisting Liberia’s most promising young leaders to address our country’s most critical problem: the education crisis.

Position Summary

TFL Teacher Fellows will teach in high needs school classrooms where their education and preparation will improve the quality of learning and educational experience of their students, and cascade change throughout the school. Fellows will attend a teacher training institute in preparation for a 2-year service commitment at an assigned school in counties across Liberia. Fellows support peer learning circles to encourage teacher learning between established teachers and incoming fellows to improve pedagogical practices and promote active learning.

Responsibilities

Complete an intensive pre-service training institute:

  • Learn from TFL Facilitators how to support quality learning in classrooms, based on the C Certificate curriculum and international best practices tailored for the local context
  • Active participation and demonstration of commitment to Fellowship through attendance at all training, professional development, and mentoring.

Apply training in classrooms to improve education quality for students in assigned school classroom(s):

  • Teaching full-time in a high-needs primary school for 2 academic years working alongside school administration and fellow teachers
  • Strive to deliver a high standard of education and promote a child-friendly learning environment

Co-Lead educational improvements in wider school:

  • Support teacher learning circles to encourage foster learning between existing teachers and new cohort to improve pedagogical practices and promote active learning
  • Working with school leadership and established cohort to engage and advocate for students, parents, and the community in school management and educational support

Education and Experience

  • Minimum qualification of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university/college in Liberia or another country- all subject areas will be considered
  • High academic performance in secondary and university schooling
  • Experience and passion working with children and promoting children’s rights

  • Strong goal orientation and focus
  • Influencing and communication skills so as to leverage people and relationships to outcomes
  • Highly proficient in written and spoken English and is comfortable communicating with diverse populations
  • Strong record of leadership achievement

Additional Preferred Skills and Experiences:

  • 1+ years relevant work or volunteer experience
  • Experience working in Liberia and knowledge of the Liberian educational system
  • Fluency in one of Liberia’s indigenous languages/dialects, and/or another foreign language
  • Life experience in the target communities we serve or supporting children living in underserved communities
